Skateboard Parts

Although there are many different skateboard parts other than the deck, the other three most important parts are the trucks, wheels, and bearings. The trucks of the skateboard attach the deck to the wheels and other skateboard components. Most commonly, made from an aluminum alloy, the trucks actually consist of a baseplate and a hanger. The baseplate is the part of the truck that attaches directly to the deck along with some cushions which help dictate the board’s maneuverability. The hanger then attaches to the baseplate and houses the axel which unites the wheels and deck. A screw called the kingpin attaches all of the pieces together, adjusting this piece will determine if the board turns easily or stiffly.

Wheels are a very important skateboard part. Size of the wheel and hardness of the wheel are the two most important factors in determining how the board performs. Smaller harder wheels are better for trick skateboarding as there is a lower center of gravity and a slower top speed. Kick-flips and Ollies are much easier to do with smaller wheels. Ramp boarding tends to favor larger softer wheels because higher top speeds are necessary to accelerate up a ramp and the soft wheels also help cushion impact upon landing.

All skateboards use ball bearings to help facilitate the wheels movement. This particular skateboard part should be seen as essential. Every board mounts on its axel by virtue of two bearings each with seven inner balls. In conjunction with a good deck, trucks, and wheels bearings will greatly increase the ease at which your wheels turn.
